SUCCESSES - How a Lazy Cat Helped George Learn to Relax

George had drawn on his high energy and strong work ethic to create a successful printing business. A diagnosis of hypertension brought George to me. Concerned about the potential side effects of antihypertensive medication, George preferred to manage his blood pressure by learning to better manage his stress. “The problem is,” he confessed, “I just don’t know how to slow down.”

We identified several periods during the day when George could practice the relaxation exercises I taught him. He found a wooded trail in a park near his office where he could walk at lunch time. He identified a yoga class he could join. Then he did none of these things.

Though George recognized the value and importance of these self-care activities, he just couldn’t bring himself to follow through. George felt it would be lazy and unproductive to interrupt his busy day for self-care. Anxiety about all the things he should be accomplishing kept him from engaging in ‘non-productive’ activities and achieving the relaxation he needed.

When we sought help from his Intuitive Intelligence, George encountered the image of a lazy Cat, lying in the sun on a window seat. Through the Cat, George discovered a part of himself that not only knew how to relax; it actually enjoyed the calm and valued tranquility. George just needed to learn, from his Cat, the art of slowing down.

Skeptical at first, George told the Cat, “That’s all well and good for a cat. You have nothing else to do all day. I have a company to run!”

Ignoring this, the Cat invited him to join her on the widow seat and give it a try. George remained resistant. The Cat suggested George merge with her in order learn how good and natural relaxation really feels. Recognizing that he was here to learn from the Cat, George reluctantly agreed.

One with the Cat, George experienced a sense of calm contentment free of guilt he had never known before. He found this new sensation luxurious and quite delightful. From this new perspective, he recognized self-care as natural and appropriate.

In fact, from the Cat’s perspective George could see how preposterous it would be to continue driving himself as he’d been doing for his entire life. With his company now well established, he had earned his rest. Following the Cat’s wise guidance, George became empowered to relax and achieve better balance in his life.

With his powerful new learning, George developed a regular practice of relaxation and yoga which he came to enjoy. He took daily lunchtime walks in the park. Any time he felt himself slipping back into his old habits George remembered the Cat and held firm to his newfound calm. He found that better balance in his life actually improved his performance at work and his blood pressure came down without needing to go on medication.
